How Music Positively Transforms Us

How Music Positively Transforms Us

I've been noticing for a while now that it's just about every day that music helps me out.

It's easy to let the world's more upsetting events bring us down and in some cases push us to disillusionment and hopelessness.  And we can allow our life challenges to bring us to our lowest feelings.  I know that it's up to me how I experience the world.  That's why I've been working at turning around my attitude.  And music is one of the greatest ways to manage my energy.  In other words, to uplift me when I go negative.

Music brings me up, takes me on a mental vacation and best of all brings me messages.

I let it rip way loud while I'm dealing with the famous traffic in this part of the country.  It stops me from becoming too attached to someone else’s not so awesome driving behavior.

Sometimes I use it to paint and write by because it seems to put me in a day dreamy state where time kind of slows down for me.

And I love that my intuition often speaks to me through music.

When I recognize the song playing in my head I'm becoming pretty good at deciphering what it’s showing up to communicate to me.

Sometimes it’s there to help me lighten my mood, to relax me or it's offering me a message.  Whatever the reason, I'm grateful.

I love anything with a horn and elements of FUNK or old school R&B.  I love the alto Sax.  There are many musicians I admire and love to listen to.  One of my favorites is Maceo Parker.  These photos are of Maceo Parker and me.   How Music Positively Transforms UsIf you don't know already, Maceo used to play horn for James Brown and Ray Charles.  He went on to become one of the most famous horn players of all time.  If you haven't heard “Pass the Peas” or “Shake Everything You’ve Got” you really ought to.

I hoped I'd meet Maceo Parker one day so I could tell him how much his music means to me.

He's been playing in Europe and I was hoping he'd return.  He did.  We saw two performances in two different venues.  The second time is when I did the fan thing.

Usually, I prefer to stay in the back of a room.  And around celebrities?  I usually look at the floor so as not to gawk at them. I assume they get gawked at a lot.  But something came over me and I ended up at the front of Maceo Parker's autograph line.  That's another fan's arm trying to get his CD signed as Maceo and I are shaking hands. Maceo's laughing because I'm gushing.  I was very uncool but I'm so glad I got to tell him how much I like his music.  When I shared with him that his music changed my life he said: "well that's a first".   I hope that wasn't the first time he heard that.

How Music Positively Transforms UsMusic and intuition work well together.

There's a pretty good chance you love music too.  Doesn't everyone to one degree or another?  You know how much it touches you.  Notice when you wake up with a song in your head.  It's not a coincidence.  It's isn't there because it's stuck from you hearing it the day before, although that happens too.  But it's often there for another reason.  Maybe the lyrics or the song title is significant.  It doesn't even have to be all of the lyrics that contain the message.  It could be the overall message or just a few words of the lyrics.  If you don't know the lyrics just look them up and read through them.  See if any part of the song's message speaks to you.

I'm always brought to songs of musical artists that I'm already drawn to.  They're already on my playlist or a favorite Pandora station.  The other morning it was a supportive message through an Earth, Wind & Fire song.  Other times it's Stevie Wonder.  These are artists with high vibrating messages anyway so they're great choices for my intuitive guidance to give me a message.

What's funny is that I don't usually pay attention to lyrics.  My body resonates with melody and beat first, and I notice if there's a horn or alto sax.  Tower of Power has a sax player you want to hear.  Then there's the electric guitar solo piece that comes in around 3:20 in the live version of Earth, Wind, & Fire's That's the Way of the World.  At 4:20 in the piece that guitar takes off and I'm so happy I could burst and feeling those good chills.

So after all that, if my brain and my thoughts quiet down for a minute I may notice the words they're singing.  I know that's strange.  Some of my most favorite songs I have no idea what the song's about.  I almost feel I should apologize for that.

Now my husband knows the words to songs.  He'll know all the band musicians, what other bands they've played in, what kind of guitar they play.  He recognizes the key, and notices in detail how they're playing the instruments including the chords.  Pretty handy guy when I want to know the words.  There have been a few mornings before we even lift our heads off the pillow when I'm trying to sing a song's melody so he can tell me what the lyrics are.  If I can tell him the song name or halfway sing the notes for him he'll give me the lyrics.  But I usually look them up online.

Intuition is no time for rules, seeing things in black or white, or looking for the science and reasoning behind what shows up.  Let any disbelief fade away while you take on a feeling of wonder.

The point is, have fun with how music shows up for you.  Whether it's transforming your mood or connecting you with a message.  Most of the time the message I'm receiving is supportive rather than educational.

And next time you're feeling a little low, put on your favorite playlist or streaming service station and allow the music to work with you.  Or grab a piece of paper or your journal, turn on the music and write about what's showing up for you.

Just recognizing how music positively transforms us, way outside of our boxes, is a good place to start.
